Guided Rainforest Hike
This tour with one of our local guides or sometimes also with resident biologists from the “Tropenstation” is always recommendable. You hike through secondary and also untouched primary forest with over 2.500 (!) species of plants in a countless variety. On the way, you pass walking palms, giant trees and lianas, orchids, bromeliads and there is a good chance to see colorful birds, such as trogons or toucans, shiny butterflies or possibly monkeys. 1 ½ - 4 hours

Río Bonito Horseback Ride Tour
You leave the Lodge on horseback and ride through the rainforest over a ridge to the neighboring “Valle Bonito” (“beautiful valley”). Passing by abandoned farms and plantations, we cross the river “Rio Bonito” several times and continue on to the Piedras Blancas National Park ranger station. On the way back, we have the opportunity to swim in one of the clear, warm ponds in the riverbed. There are no roads in Valle Bonito and it is surrounded by primary rainforest. Excellent birding. 4 hours

El Chorro Waterfall Mountain Bike Tour
This pleasant bike ride takes you through the village of La Gamba (4 km, plane) and gives a good opportunity to observe rural Costa Rican country life. A short trail at the end of La Gamba leads to the “Chorro Waterfall”. There you can swim in several crystal clear pools, surrounded by rainforest. The courageous can climb up the riverbed over small waterfalls until they reach a large waterfall with a natural pool in the middle of the rainforest. 4 hours

Casa Orquídeas Botanical Garden Boat Tour
We go by car to Golfito, where we board the boat. This tour takes us along the untouched, hardly inhabited coast of the Golfo Dulce, where the rainforest reaches all the way down to the beach. Pelicans and frigate birds sit in the trees overlooking Golfo Dulce, and there is a chance to see dolphins. After one hour, we reach Casa Orquídeas, a private tropical garden with hundreds of species of ornamental and edible plants. After a guided tour either from the owner or our tourguide, the rest of the time remains for swimming and a picnic. 6 hours

Rio Coto Mangrove Boat Tour
In Golfito, we board a boat and go south along the coast. After crossing Zancudo Bay, we go up the Rio Sábalo and turn into small, meandering branches, where Egrets, Herons, Cormorants, Pelicans and the typical stilt roots of the mangrove-vegetation can be seen. After a slow ride through the dense mangrove swamp, we stop over at the Playa Zancudo, to have lunch and to go swimming. We return through a narrow canal which separates Golfito Bay from the open ocean. Depending on the tides, we change the direction of the tour, because this canal is passable only at highest tide. 6 hours

Golfo Dulce Kayak Tour
From Golfito, a motor boat takes us to the palm-fringed Playa Cacao, where we begin kayaking along the untouched coast. The waters of Golfo Dulce are calm in the morning, and a large variety of waterbirds can be seen. The rainforest reaches all the way down to the many uninhabited coves and bays, where we have the opportunity to disembark for swimming. The motor boat follows at a discreet distance, ready to pick us up after around three hours (or when we give a sign). 5 hours

Esquinas Rainforest Adventure Tour – Horseback Riding, Hiking and Boating
This full day tour is for guests who are looking for the ultimate rainforest adventure. Assisted by one of our local guides we leave the Lodge on horseback and ride up to the neighboring Valle Bonito. Then we hike three to four hours through the center of the Esquinas forest, crossing over a mountain before descending to Playa San Josecito on Golfo Dulce. After reaching the palm-fringed beach, we have time for a picnic and to swim in the ocean before being picked up by the motor boat for the ride back along the beautiful coast to Golfito. Good physical shape and fitness is recommended. 8 hours

Guided Night Hike
This hike starts after dinner and provides the opportunity to experience the forest by starlight. Nocturnal wildlife to be seen includes snakes, various kinds of owls and frogs, toads, bats, spiders and maybe bigger mammals like kinkajous or an ocelot. 1 - 1 ½ hour

Birdwatching Tour
This tour can be made with one of our local guides on the trails in the forest as well as along the road to La Gamba, beside the pastures. Birds to be seen include Egrets, Flycatchers, Hummingbirds, Trogons, Toucans, Woodpeckers, Tanagers, Antbirds, Manakins and, last but not least, the famous Black-cheeked Ant-tanager, which is reported to be endemic in the Golfo Dulce area! The best time to walk is in the morning or in the late afternoon. 1 – 4 hours

Corcovado National Park Excursion
The easiest way to see Costa Rica´s most famous National Park is with a 20-minute flight from Golfito over Golfo Dulce to Sirena, in the center of Corcovado National Park. During the five hour stay, you will have ample time to hike the well marked trails, where you will most likely see monkeys, scarlet macaws, and other wildlife. 8 hours

Wilson Botanical Gardens - Las Cruces
The 80 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, run by the Organization for Tropical Studies, contains one of the foremost collections of tropical plants in the Western Hemisphere. Guides lead us on a two hour walk through the exotic gardens which attract many birds. Las Cruces is at an altitude of 5,000 feet and has a pleasant, cool climate. After local Italian lunch in San Vito, we pass coffee plantations on the way back to the lodge. 7 hours
